I spent more than half a decade working as a teaching artists and program manager for a non-profit social circus for youth (what is a social circus?).
Working with youth from all over Chicagoland, our goal was to get young people collaborating through a medium that drew their excitement and focus.
Circus skills are niche, fun, challenging, and intimidating. Sure, many people learn to juggle at a young age, or enroll in gymnastics at 9 years old — but they often forget that passion and sense of child-like wonder by the time they turn 18. They (we) forget what it means to create something from nothing with peers.
